Here I sit, late at night, or very early in the morning depending on how you look at it, and I'm hungry. There's no ready-made food on hand, even a sandwich would have to be assembled. My thoughts turn to Taco Bell.
But why is that? Do I genuinely want tacos, or has my craving simply been programmed by Taco Bell's advertising, knowing that they're open late. Knowing that for a small stack of cash... still larger than it should be... I can put together a box with a few different options in it, even a drink. A nice, cold drink on what's been a rather warm day.
There's a problem though. That would require having to order the food online ahead of time to get the special deal I want, getting in my car, and driving there. Even having to put my shoes on. Not to mention spending that bit of money I mentioned. So in some ways it would be less of a fuss and certainly less expensive just to make a sandwich.
But peanut butter again? It's good peanut butter, but still. The chalupa calls. It has a soft Spanish accent and promises an unknown meat product. Then there's the drink. The cup of liquid with even colder, harder bits of liquid floating around in it. I even know how it'd go. I'd sit there, eating it, my cat watching with great interest until I let him sniff a tortilla chip, then he'd turn and wander away, deciding he didn't want any after all.
So what'll it be? Which one will I choose? Taco Bell closes in about a half-hour, so I need to decide.
Then I remember I still have a can of deviled ham left. It's like human-grade cat food, but at least I already have it. I even sprinkle a little meat rub seasoning on it so I can pretend I've elevated it slightly. And as for the drink? I have a little powdered drink mix I can mix with water in a shaker. My cat barely gives the whole thing a glance.
I had food or something closely resembling it, I'm not hungry anymore, and I have a drink that's as cold as the tap can get it.
But tomorrow, when I'm already out driving around, it might be time for tacos.
