These days it seems like companies are pushing out new AAA games all the time, and they all seem to have a few things in common. The graphics are fantastic, the music is decent, and the game itself is completely lacking any depth or creativity.
It makes me think back to the days of earlier computer games, especially during the days when EGA and VGA shareware was at the height of its popularity. These games didn't have the best graphics, they didn't have the best sound design. They were often made by very small teams of people. Sometimes only one person.
But they were often filled with creativity, and filled with story. You could tell the people that made the game really cared about it. They didn't just slap some pixels together because some big corporation told them to.
This also holds true of some of the titles on the 8-bit computer platforms as well, like the Commodore 64 and Apple IIe.
There's been a real resurgence of the indie game scene, especially as prices for AAA games go up while their overall quality goes down. The indie scene is the closest thing we have to those old 8-bit and shareware classics. And with most AAA games being locked behind some kind of DRM while most indie games can be acquired through platforms like Good Old Games (GoG) where there is no DRM, you know that once you buy the game, once you download it, it's yours.
With rare exception I'm just not interested in the AAA scene anymore. Instead, I'll be watching the indie games.
